Campus Session for Mod. 1 9th Nov 2011

This Campus Session was taken by Alan Durrant.
Mapping can take form about any subject or about the NOW or the FUTURE. Mapping can also be used for frequencies or for the nature of the engagement or different ways of networking.  Above is a general map of the here and now on networking.  This was a collaboration of the ideas within my group on the day.  Note the use of networking with our families, remind ourselves that we can make use of their experiences and their contacts so it goes beyond the obvious group, thus including the next layer and so forth beyond that layer.  This is something that may not be obvious at first. I make the most of my family who's professional lives include;  Research and Development within Telecoms industry,  Music, TV and video production and Finance and Economics..  The obvious network are the Social and Media networks as in FB, Twitter, blogs, Forums etc.  Include your professional colleagues within design, music, dancers also any employers and think about their networks.
Points raised within the other groups;
  • How much time do you spend on networking?
  • Social Networking -  culling the people that do not give back
  • Networks is about decisions and choices on whom you keep in touch with that is mutually beneficial at the time or may be in the future.
  • Mapping as a 'Time Line' a journey of time,  possibly your future and how it keeps moving, changing goal posts.  We are currently changing our careers, we are uncertain so, a 'snakes and ladders' effect is happening.
Assessment Component
This was a break down of Portfolio Part 1, 2, and 3
Critical Reflection.  Explain what you have learnt.  You are your own manager or coach of your professional practice.  Your advisers will not tell you what you are doing is wrong or correct.  It's about your experiences, what are the changes, what are the key themes, what are you most sure about, what will I pursue further.
If nothing makes sense about Kolb's theory etc., then write about that. Take a slightly distant view.  It's NOT about how you feel, it's about making sense of that moment and what methods do you use.  Post on your blog or in your journal.  Realise it's a demonstration of your appreciation of YOUR position, include what you want to investigate further after realising something you missed.  Do read other people's blogs.
Evidence.  This could be in the form of a letter, blog or images.  Somethings will be harder to support with evidence.  Practice writting in your blog, post it ask for feed back.  There may be some private writings in your journal that you do not wish to disclose and without naming people and events can give an outline and conclusion..
Send an electronic version to Avni, link any appendicies to electronic version.
Send word document to Avni at Trent Park address.

It was the first Campus Session attended as I have work commitments and I must say how glad I was to be part of the group.  It showed me that there is much support if you ask for it and that you are all thinking the same things. I was glad to have attended and met the other learners.
Hope this will help in some way.

  1. Thanks for this Corinda - a good explanation of the session - I will put the three mappings that Alan collected from the groups on the Libguide under Module 1 Campus Sessions. Yes, the theory behind what we are doing is one of facilitation rather than 'teaching' and we also had to learn how to do it (funny that... but true).

It is amazing that knowledge strands that are out there waiting for us to identify them. The mapping creates a visual guide that we can use to analyse this activity.

You mentioned in the session that in business, forecasting and monitoring through business plans is required. Yet I think in our own professional lives we tend to use ad hoc planning; in the arts some of this is because of the constant flux of jobs and not really being able to predict the next job. However within those restrictions, mapping networks is a way to at least know what resources are out there to help create some structures that give meaning to these tacit and invisible realities. These professional networks and communities of practice are sometimes evident on our CVs, but sometimes they are not on that top layer of reckoning. Perhaps then we can use these networking maps to determine some overall goals, career planning for lack of a better word.

Discussing this with colleagues and our BAPP (Arts) network is really useful, so I hope others have followed your example here in noting their response to the session.

  2. Dear Corinda!
Thank you for your post. I find it quite helpful, as I am living and working in Germany and it´s quite tricky for me to come to the Campus Sessions...it´s good to get kind of an idea, what you might discuss in a group working on the same things, that I try to envision by myself.
There is a programme- I know it works on Mac, but maybe it is also available for other systems- depending on what you use...it´s called "Mind Node". It allows you to create mind-maps very effectively. I have been using it for a while now, also for private purposes- for example I would have one "node" to remind me what house work I need to do, or one for some photography things, the next for the private office work I must not forget..etc...I think it´s quite a helpful tool.
Your post also reminded me of a dance-transition workshop I went to not that long ago. We must not underestimate the power of the network we have already created around ourselves- especially concerning family and friends.
We used the so called "5-Step-Method" that is usefull to get in touch with almost anybody in the world...even the Dali Lama or Barack Obama!
You always know someone, who knows someone, who can get you in touch with someone...it´s amazing!!
Anyhow....so long for now...thanx again for your post....all the best!!

  3. Thank you Corinda! This is a great help as I wasn't able to attend the session so it gives a really good overview of the day!

  4. Thanks for the mind mapping post Corinda, it is, like Fione said really good for the people who can't make the campus sessions to see what we missed. It is another 'network' example that is in place between us, the BAPP group that are connected by our mutual studies.
Fiones idea of a 5 step method to contact people is very interesting, we all know how small the Dance and Performance worlds are, and we must all have many contacts in common without even knowing. The possibilities are endless.
Also your notes about the Portfolio are helpful, i'm making bullet points now for this, in order to prepare for the written assignment which we have to hand in.
    Thanks Corinda!
I 'map' alot, and also uses lists, as short points are easier for me to focus on and remember them, rather than alot of words and paragraphs.
