My first documentary film on Salsa Dance

Here is the link to my documentary film on Salsa Dance submitted as my artefact with my professional inquiry in January 2013.

It is on my recently set up Vimeo account and is for private viewing only.  Permission has been granted to show this piece of work .  Hopefully my settings shouldn't allow for it to be seen commercially or for public viewing or copying.

I intend to continue documenting dance as a hobby for now and have joined IAC - the film and video institute for help and advice going forward.

I would love to hear your comments.

  1. Hi Corinda,
It's great to see that you have finished the course and that you have found a new skill in film making that you intend you continue. Well done! As a person who knows very little about Salsa dance I found your video very interesting. Best of luck for the future!

  2. Great Video Corinda. It really gives me a sense of the passion and life that goes into this particular style of dance, it made me want to join in...

It also highlighted this idea of fusion. I'm not so up on the idea, but the documentary seemed to expose it as a concept within dance that is used as a tool to celebrate and re-invent dance.

    Well done on finishing!

  3. Hello Ahmet
    Thank you.

My Professional Inquiry was about fusion and it's effects on the conservation of traditional Salsa Dance. Dance fusion is practiced extensively today, fusing or merging one genre of dance with another such as contemporary, classical ballet and hip hop as examples.
Fusion or merging of dance styles is important to any choreographer/teacher/dancer to emerge with a new style or expression of dance.
Salsa is a social dance and has evolved in time. I found that fusion had not effected the basic rhythm in the music, keeping the traditional beats and flavour of Salsa. Native Cuban dancers/teachers teach their culture and traditions.
Professionally trained teachers and non trained dance teachers in the UK have taken Salsa dance and developed it further, it continues to evolve but in keeping with the basic traditions. Salsa is a social dance but dance participants are trained to professional levels.
In one camp you have the Afro Cuban traditional dance and at the other end of the dance spectrum salsa is being diluted and most participants unaware of the origins.

This documentary shows two different teaching of salsa styles. Both are very successful teachers in the UK and recognised world wide even though one had not received dance training. Due to time constraints I was unable to show the third style which would have been Afro Cuban taught by a native Cuban.

I am pleased with the documentary film and I’m looking forward to improving my filming, editing and documenting dance.

Ahmet, I wish you the very best with your Professional Inquiry, your final module.

I look forward to reading your updates.

  5. Hi Corinda,
I apologise for the delay in blogging about your documentary. Having watched it a couple of times now, I can see that it must have been such an interesting inquiry for you to complete. It is incredibly clear how different the two styles of Salsa as an example of the fusion of outside influences to the original style of salsa dance.
This can be transferred to most disciplines of dance, particularly those that started as social dances. If I were to think along the lines of tap dance. As per our previous conversation, the fusion from different cultures and attitudes towards a style of dance can alter the whole feel and there for the method of teaching too!
It would be interesting to understand from a teacher's perspective whether they teach what feels right to them / is authetic or whether they are able / do change their method to suit their clients ability / style / own culture etc.
A fascinating subject Corinda. Well done with your documentary. You should be very pleased indeed! :-)
    Speak soon.
    Best Wishes,
    Jo
